Summer’s here and while PTAs may be ending the 2009-2010 school year, they should be busy planning for the next school year now. A key element to a successful PTA year is training. We’re pleased that so many PTA members took advantage of the free regional trainings that we offered throughout the state this school year. We also hope that PTA members participated in council trainings, or took advantage of the online courses that National PTA provides. (Log onto www.pta.org/e-learning.  All you will need is the user name and password on the back of your membership card.) Training benefits us all with new skills learned and the opportunity to grow a new generation of leaders that will carry their communities forward.

If your local PTA or council is interested in hosting a regional training, please contact me at VPLeadership@mdpta.org, contact our Maryland PTA office at office@mdpta.org, or phone the office at 410-760-6221. Our directive is to host at least three regional trainings a year, but with your help and volunteer initiative we exceeded that goal this year, and want to continue to do so for the 2010-2011 school year. Please watch our website for the most current training information. We will also host financial trainings at our Glen Burnie office this summer and fall. We hope to see many of you at our largest training event, the summer conference, in July.

Maryland PTA offers training in many forms to our officers, councils and local units.  This is accomplished thru Summer Leadership Conference, Regional Trainings, Maryland PTA Convention, Local Unit training, Council Officer training, National PTA events, BSP Training and more.

Want to learn more?

At a time when PTA budgets are tight and schedules are even tighter, e-learning is a solution for members looking to expand their skills cost-effectively and without the need to travel. This e-learning initiative is a step toward achieving PTA’s goal of making all members informed advocates by 2020.

Choose from the following courses, and look for new courses to be added throughout the year. Each course takes 30 minutes to an hour to complete and can be revisited repeatedly for more practice.

  •  PTA Basics
  •  Grant Writing
  •  Conflict Management
  •  Planning Your New PTA Year
  •  Parliamentary Procedure
  •  Running a Successful PTA Program
  •  Effective Advocacy for Your Child
  •  Writing and Proposing PTA Resolutions
